PADI SMB Specialty - be seen and be safe
The Course
The correct deployment and use of Surface Marker Buoys (SMBs) and Delayed SMBs (DSMBs) is crucial to diving safely in the sea both in the UK and abroad. Indeed in many areas and on certain boats their use has become mandatory. SMBs are simple pieces of equipment but must be used correctly or they can cause problems. The PADI SMB specialty will teach you to use them on drift dives, in areas of high boat traffic and as an aid to safe ascents with your buddy. This certification will enable you to dive safely with SMBs and counts towards your Master Scuba Diver rating.
Course Outline
Your instructor will brief you and demonstrate the correct use of SMBs at the dive site before you complete two open water dives. In the briefing you will learn about types of SMBs and reels, methods of preparation and deployment and how to avoid problems with their use.
Open Water dives, you will complete two open water dives where you will choose, carry and deploy SMBs and DSMBs in various conditions both underwater and on the surface. You will learn the easiest techniques to deploy and use SMBs.
Course Duration/Schedules
You complete your briefings and two open water dives at Capernwray (near Lancaster) over a single day. New Horizons offer scheduled dates, but if these are not convenient please give us a call to discuss suitable alternatives (small supplements may apply).
