Help Create the Largest Marine Protected Area on the Planet!
Project Chagos
06/01/2010
Happy New Year, in this the International Year of Biodiversity!
I am sure many of you, if not all of you would like to continue to do your bit to help the environment in 2010. Unfortunately, this time it doesn’t involve you travelling to the tropics and diving/trekking to help protect the reef and rainforests of the world, but rather backing a plan by the UK Government to create the largest marine protected area in the world!
You may not be aware of the Chagos Archipelago a collection of Islands in the Indian Ocean collectively known as British Indian Ocean Territory (BIOT). Many destinations, countries, Islands claim to possess the most pristine coral reefs in the world and we all know it’s marketing jargon. The Chagos however can lay claim to this fact! It has been empirically proven that the most pristine tropical marine environment surviving on the planet is found in this 544,000 sq km patch in the middle of the Indian Ocean!
Visit www.protectchagos.org and show your support for the creation of the Chagos no-take Marine Protected Area.
Take Action Now! (We have until 12th February, which is the end of the official consultation period).
